Philips previews first Windows Media Center PC
Living room giants are obviously feeling the pinch
from encroaching PC vendors as Philips decides to fight back by launching its
very first Windows Media Center Edition (MCE) device. Better known for DVD and hard disk recorders,
the company will show off its Showline Media Center MCP9350i device
(pictured) at this week’s IFA 2005 consumer electronics show in Berlin. Due to ship
in October, it will house a 250GB hard disk drive, Intel Pentium 4 processor
and Wi-Fi
facilities. Details are scant but we assume it will also be running
Windows XP MCE 2005 software and come with a remote control, and
possibly, a keyboard. It’s not as small or stylish as many other Media Center
PCs but with Philips’ market presence and retail links, this device could really boost
the profile of Media Center PCs in the living room. Check back here for more details
over the coming days as there will be plenty of coverage of the IFA show, which kicks
off tomorrow.
