Samsung solves Blu-ray/HD-DVD conflict

With the looming Blu-ray Vs. HD-DVD war set to divide Hollywood studios and the storage market, Samsung has promised to bring out a DVD machine next year that will support both formats. The news was revealed at the IFA 2005 show in Berlin. Hollywood_sign_1Samsung is already part of the Blu-ray camp but a combination of common sense and financial smarts means it plans to cash in on a potentially huge market for dual-format players and recorders. The chances of a unified format were recently dashed by both the Toshiba and Sony-led camps. A unified hardware solution seems to be the only route and Samsung is the first out of the blocks – with an announcement, that is. There are no technical details yet as to how it will manage this technical feat but as a user you can expect to pay for the privilege. Still, it will be cheaper than forking out for separate Blu-ray and HD-DVD drives, which is what Sony and Toshiba really expect you to do.
