Plasma Vs. LCD TV War Getting Ugly

In an unprecedented move, key makers of plasma TVs have banded together to fight the rising tide of LCD TVs.

Pioneer, Hitachi and Panasonic have launched a new survey and Web site promoting the virtues of plasma TV technology over LCD TVs, Panasonicplasma which have taken over the sub-40in TV sector. The trouble is that LCD TVs are now starting to encroach on the traditional 40in-100in TV territory of plasma TVs.

This report was carried out among 603 people in the UK, Germany and France who were asked to sit through some demonstrations of both TV technologies showing the same content. And the results were (drum roll):

* 61% of people said that plasma provided the sharper picture, compared to 21% per cent for LCD

* 65% said plasma offered better colour reproduction compared to 24% for LCD

* 62% thought plasma handled motion better versus 15% going for LCD

* 61% of people thought plasma's contrast range was better than LCD. 26% opted for LCD.

With Christmas being a hugely important time for TV manufacturers, expect the war of words to get worse and the rival surveys to come thick and fast.

Having been a Sony fan for years & looking to buy a Bravia 42" 1080 i decided to withstand the DT'S & ventured into a Panny showroom,
All i can say is after seeing the range of Plasma's on display & how they managed with all the normal pitfalls of ANY flat screen display with regard to on air broadcasting's & the like, Well it's more detox im afraid & with regarding that little thing called HD, Well those panny's I saw were just superb!!!!!! ;-),

Plasma for me from now on!

Not enough info., How do they compare for servicability. Plasma appears to have the edge but the reliability of each sysem should be compared dont you think. Plasma does not appear to be too common below 40", is that correct?
Thak you for the opportunity to place a query.

Considering the state of the planet, surely power consumption ought to be taken into account as I have read that plasma use much more than LCD.

Taking into cosideration the power consumtion being greater with Plasma but quality is a bit better than the LCD ,I have also believe that Plasma does not last as long as LCD but are cheaper to purchase so it seems some more research are required about both.

It's OK to say that the plasma or LCD have great pictures, but, how long do they last, will you get 5 years plus out of them?
I know two people who purchased flat screens and they had to exchange them within 12/14 months, could not be repaired. That's dear veiwing in my books

A couple of things in regard to prior comments, the energy efficiency advantage ascribed to LCDs is based on the maximum energy requirements of each type of set and is bogus because an LCD is on full-power all the time (all pixels lit) while a plasma only powers pixels with actual image content ... I'm seen some test lab results that show the electricity actually used by same-size plasmas and LCDs tuned to the same program source to be close to identical.

In terms of service life, plasma has been around for more than five years and the vast majority of sets sold have never had to be serviced. Big screen, flat-panel LCDs are relatively new and have no track record. Based on my experience with smaller LCDs as the editor-in-chief of one of the two best-selling laptop computer magazines, I wouldn't bet on any of them lasting more than two years.

In short plasma tv does have better refresh rates for fast moving action pictures like sports. However lcd tv are simpler to install and are generally cheaper.

[…]Amazing how thin our displays are getting these days. Even more amazing is how big these displays could get. Potentially, this screen could cover my entire room. Just think: THE ULTIMATE GAME SYSTEM!

Usally LCD have a better definition, and better black. There are some exception for plasma but only on few brands like Pioneer. But if you want a TV that will be ready for the new technology like Blu Ray or Full HD … go for a LCD
